Aahh, springtime. As we thaw out from winter and pull our skirts and sandals out from hibernation, why not clean out, stock up and organize all of our beauty products while we’re at it?
Here are a few simple tips to refresh your vanity and makeup drawers, and streamline your springtime beauty routine.
Out with the old …
First things first, it’s time to toss anything old or expired (or any wintry colors that won’t fly in springtime).
Most powder- or cream-based items – powders, blush, eyeshadow, concealer, lipstick and lip gloss – can be kept up to one year, along with your moisturizers and cleansers. Anything liquid, such as foundation, gel eyeliner or mascara should be tossed after three to six months. Long story short: Get in the habit of purging older cosmetics on a regular basis.
If you notice any change in color, scent or consistency in any of your items, that’s a sign it’s probably no good. Something you’re unsure about? Throw it out. Those germs from your winter colds can stick around on your makeup longer than you might think.
… in with the new
Now for replenishing your stock! Start off with an exfoliating cleanser – like Olay Regenerist Regenerating Cream Cleanser – and renewing eye cream – like Olay Eyes Pro Retinol Eye Treatment – to help smooth your skin and highlight its natural glow. After all, one of the best parts of spring is wearing less makeup and sporting a softer, more natural look.
Trade in your heavier creams for a non-greasy moisturizer with a broad spectrum SPF – we love Olay Regenerist Micro-sculpting Cream. Swap your full-coverage foundation for a tinted moisturizer and lightweight bronzer. If you’re prone to sweat or have an oilier complexion, look for oil-free liquids or matte powders.
To maximize your new products’ shelf life, always wash your hands before and after use, and replace caps tightly. And always clean those makeup brushes at least every couple of weeks.
Use decorative stands and cups to store Venus razor refills, bobby pins and cotton swabs so you don’t waste any time in the morning searching for things. Simple glass trays with compartments help organize your items and keep everything looking neat and easy to find.
Last but not least, store your winter shades and scents, and put your springtime lip glosses, nail polishes and fragrances front and center on your bathroom counter or vanity. Not only will your most-used items be handy, the seasonal colors will also brighten everything up.
